What's so Good about Full Face Snorkels?
Full face snorkel masks have really gained in popularity around the world over the past 4 or so years, with many people only just discovering these now.
I discovered these by accident around 4 years ago so bought one each for my two teenage sons. Before this, they both loved snorkeling but didn't enjoy the drawbacks of regular masks and snorkels. The constant fogging up, leaking, and the mouth piece annoyed them.
It really used to take a lot of the fun out of snorkeling for them, and for me. Quite often they'd just resort to using their regular set of goggles or traditional masks.
Full face snorkel masks became a game-changer. Now we all enjoy snorkeling so much more, especially me, with less whining and more swimming from the kids.

Full Face Snorkels
Snorkeling is a wonderful experience which many people miss out on because traditional masks and snorkels can be annoying or uncomfortable.
Full face snorkel masks make snorkeling more enjoyable, especially in salty sea water.
There's no more snorkel to gag on, or clamp down on. This often causes people to have sore jaws after only a short time of snorkeling - and water going into the tube is just plain annoying.
Full face masks keep the water out and off your face. If any water does enter the tube, it's channelled away from the face and to the chin area. As soon as you lift your head out of the water, it runs out through a valve at the chin.
How good is that?! Personally, I think it's great!

The Ninja Shark Full Face Mask Range
Ninja Shark Equalising Mask - New Version
This mask is great for people who love to dive deep.
The Ninja Shark Equalising mask helps you dive deeper than regular full face snorkel masks. This is because this lets you pinch your nose to allow you to equalise pressure in your ears as you dive.
The new updated version was released in October 2020 and it comes with a longer tube than the previous one. The longer snorkel tube makes it 4 times easier to spot a snorkeler in the water. This is a big plus for safety reasons especially making it easy for other water uses to spot snorkelers in the water.
The new version Equaliser snorkel mask comes with a foldable tube design making it easy to store and transport. The snorkel stays connected but folds down into the mask so it doesn't get misplaced or left behind.
The mask has the dry-top anti-leak tube system with two floating balls in the snorkel tube. These stop water from entering your mask. The balls automatically seal the snorkel mask's air valve, making it impossible for water to get inside.
The other recent improvement to this mask is the sizing. This now comes in 2 adult sizes (see the size chart below).
What is Equalising and do you need it?
You know the feeling when you're sitting in the cabin of a pressurized plane, and you start to feel some pain in your ears as it starts to descend? You would normally hold your nose and gently blow to clear the tubes in your ears and equalize the pressure, and relieve the pain.
The same principle applies to Scuba divers and snorkelers. Due to the changes in pressure from the surface as you lower your depth in the ocean, Scuba divers need to learn how to to master equalizing as they descend.
The need to equalize applies to any snorkeler who wants to swim deeper than around 10 - 12 feet. It may not sound very deep, but it's a decent depth and most leisurely snorkelers don't usually swim much deeper than this.
With the Ninja Shark Equalizing mask, you can now pinch and your nose for a proper equalization which relieves the pressure felt within your inner ears when diving deeply when snorkeling.
The Action camera is not included in the price.
Ninja Shark Air Mask for Adults
The main difference between the Ninja Shark Air and the other Ninja snorkel masks is the breathing mechanism.
With this mask, you inhale through the top tube and exhale through two valves at the side / bottom of the mask. This design means you’ll be blowing out lots of bubbles in the water as you breathe.
Some people love this, but it will annoy others. It's just a bit of fun and you do get used to it. The bubbles will follow you around on your adventures but they won't mess with your vision as they are redirected out sideways.
The Ninja Shark Air Mask is 30% lighter than any other masks. There's no compromise on quality or its features, it's just less weight and easy to carry. This makes it great for backpackers and anyone who likes to take their mask away with them on holidays.
This has the dry-top anti-leak tube system with two floating balls in the snorkel tube. These stop water from entering your mask. The balls automatically seal the snorkel mask's air valve, making it impossible for water to get inside.
No more gagging, and no salty water wrinkling your lips. With this mask, you can float safely knowing that the bubbles will be around you but not in your mouth.
The Ninja Air mask has an anti-fog coating and the same flat lens as other Ninja Shark masks. This gives high quality, crystal-clear views with less distortion and the same 180-degree panoramic views of other masks.
The Ninja Air mask uses less complex technology than the Equalizer mask, making it lower in price.
Size Chart - How to measure for Adult Sizes
Important: Always measure in a straight line, and not over the nose.
With your mouth closed, measure from the bridge of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
If the measurement is less than or equal to 12cm (4.8 inches), then S/M size is perfect.
If the measurement is greater than 12cm (4.8 inches), you can select the Adult L/XL size.
If the measurement is less than 10 cms (3.9 inches) then look at the Kids sizes below.
Compare the Ninja Shark Air & the Equaliser Masks
Before we compare the differences, lets look at the features of the masks that are the same.
Ninja Shark Air
Ninja Shark Equaliser Mask
Elastic Straps & Putting It On
On traditional snorkel masks the straps are often thin and tend to get tangled and caught in your hair. The best way around this is to buy a neoprene cover for the straps.
The straps on the Ninja Shark snorkel masks are made from wide elastic, so they don't get tangled in your hair.
It may look tricky to get the mask on initially, but it won't take long before you get the hang of it, and they are very comfortable once they're in the correct position.
The tip to getting it on is, chin first! Simply pull the straps to each side and start with your chin, then pull the straps around to the back of your head. Take a couple of seconds to wiggle it into the most comfortable position.
Equaliser Mask - Elastic Straps & Clip
With the Equaliser mask, you can release all 4 straps with one click, from the back of your mask.
This ensures a super-fast release in case you want to take the mask off.
With the new Ergo clips system, you can adjust both the top and bottom straps to give you a better seal than the previous Equaliser mask.

Tips to helping Kids adjust to Full Face Snorkel Masks
Make sure kids practice before using properly. Start by standing and getting them to lower their head into water.
It won't take them long to realise they can keep breathing the same as they normally do.
This will take a lot of the anxiety away, so they can start to enjoy the fun of snorkeling.
Ninja Shark Air XS for Kids - 5 to 11 Year Olds
Ninja Shark know colour can be an issue for some kids. This is why the Ninja Shark Air Kids snorkel masks come in neutral colours.
The Kids Air mask lets your kids inhale through the top tube and exhale through two valves at the bottom side bottom of the mask. This design means lots of bubbles will be blowing in the water as they breathe out. Kids love it - it's a bit of extra fun. The bubbles will don't mess with their vision as they are redirected out sideways away from the front of the mask.
The Air Mask is 30% lighter than any other masks, making it easy to carry.
The Air Kids comes with an anti-fog coating and a flat lens to give panoramic views underwater. With a 180 degree flat lens, it means less distortion and better views of underwater reefs.
Ninja Shark has a Lifetime Warranty on all the Air Kids snorkel masks. Ninja Shark back their technology 100% and know they are offering you the highest quality snorkel masks possible.
Longer Tube Snorkel Mask for Kids - 3 to 11 Year Olds
This mask has a longer tube that makes it up to 4 times easier to see the snorkeler in the water from a distance than other full face snorkel masks.
This is welcome news for parents wanting to keep an eye on their kids from the shore, and it also helps other water users such as paddle boarders and jet skiers spot young snorkelers in the water from a distance.
A new design of this mask has made this snorkel easy to pack up, transport, and store. This means there's less worry about trying to find missing pieces or damaged buckles.
One thing many people forget to look at when comparing masks is the quality of the materials used. Ninja Shark masks are made from non-toxic, environmentally friendly silicone. It is anti-allergic medical grade silicone, making it really soft and kind to young sensitive.
This mask is different from the Ninja Kids Air Mask by the way the air is channelled through the mask.
The Air mask pushes air out holes at the bottom of the mask, whereas this one channels it back up the snorkel tube. This is how most full face snorkel masks work.
The tube has 3 separate air channels - one for inhalation, and 2 for exhalation.
This comes in Pink and Blue and has the same flat lens as the Ninja Air Mask.
Quality Materials Make a Difference
Many of the cheaper knock-off masks are made with plastic.
This makes the inner skirt that sits on the face less flexible. It doesn't take long to become uncomfortable and leave marks on children's face.
The plastic (or cheaper grade silicone) doesn't last as long as the quality stuff either. It will fade and lose its colour within one season even with the best of care.
Not only is the Ninja Shark mask safer, but it's also much more comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed at how soft the silicone is. This is a very noticeable difference when compared to other brands.
Kids Size Chart - How to measure for the Ninja Kids Air and XS Long Snorkel Masks
Important: Always measure in a straight line, and not over the nose.
With your child's mouth closed, measure from the bridge of the nose to the bottom of their chin.
If the measurement is less than or equal to 10cm (3.9 inches), then XS size is perfect for your child.
If the measurement is greater than 10cm (3.9 inches), you can select the Adult S/M size for your child in this case.
Frequently asked questions
Full face snorkel masks are not made for Scuba diving, or Free Diving. They are designed for leisurely snorkeling near the surface of the water.
Most people with full face snorkel masks will only happily only dive around 1 to 2 metres. With practice, you can dive up to 6 to 7 meters with the Ninja Equaliser Mask.
Yes, as long as the top of the tube is above the water.
This is a snorkel mask and not a scuba diving mask. As there is no oxygen source attached to the mask, you have to hold your breath once you submerge and the top of the snorkel goes below the surface.
As you submerge, the ball floats inside the snorkel rise and seal the tube so no water goes in. The ball floats drop as you reach the surface again, allowing air back into the tube.
As we know, children come in all shapes and sizes.
These masks go by children's measurements, not by their ages. You may have a big 5 year old, or a small 12 year old. As long as their measurement from the bridge of their nose to the bottom of their chin fits within the Size Charts of the individual XS masks, then you should be good.
These might look hard to put on, but you'll quickly become accustomed to putting them on and taking off with ease.
The trick is to pull the straps to either side and put them on CHIN FIRST. Then adjust the straps at the back of your head. Gently lift the mask slightly so it falls into a comfortable position on your face.
Make sure their is no fringe or hair caught between your face and the silicone skirt as this will cause a slow leak.
Regardless of whether it’s a traditional mask or any full face snorkel mask, water will leak in if there’s hair between the silicone skirt of the mask and your skin.
Beards create tiny spaces that will allow water to slowly seep through. The same applies with fringes.
Kids often forget to push longer hair out of the way when donning the mask. Make sure there is no hair between the skin and silicon skirt and this will avoid leaks and disappointment.
The good news is, unlike traditional swimming masks, moustaches do not cause these masks to leak.
