Do magnetic shark repellent bands really work?
The theory of magnets functioning as shark repellents has been extensively studied, researched and tested since it was first discovered.
Sharks are such efficient hunters as they are able to detect very weak signals (such as the heartbeats or muscle movements) given out by their prey. This natural ability also helps them to hunt and navigate at night, or when they're in murky water.
Sharks are known for their keen hunting abilities, able to detect even the slightest signals from their prey. But what happens when technology intervenes?
Sharkbanz 2 harnesses the power of electro-magnetism to overwhelm the sharks' electro-receptors and effectively blind them, drastically reducing the risk of an attack. As the shark approaches the bracelet, it detects signals far stronger than anything in its natural food chain, causing confusion and an intense, unpleasant sensation.
Think of it as a bright light suddenly shining in your eyes - it may not hurt, but it's definitely enough to make you turn away. Dive into the science behind shark repellents and discover their true effectiveness

Video - Shark Repellent Bands versus Bull Sharks
Due to their naturally aggressive behavior and tendency to live in waters close to shore, Bull Sharks are considered to be one of the most dangerous sharks to humans.
Below is a video showing how effective the Sharkbanz can be in a baited scenario with Bull Sharks. This is an amazing video and really worth watching.
Great things about Sharkbanz 2
Sharkbanz 2 is the ultimate ocean companion for swimmers, divers, and ocean enthusiasts alike. This innovative technology offers protection from various sharks and even stingrays, all while remaining safe for other marine life such as fish, dolphins, and sea turtles.
With a magnetic design, there's no need for batteries or charging, making it always ready for your next adventure.
With an adjustable and universal fit, Sharkbanz 2 can be worn by anyone ages 5 and up on the ankle or wrist, or both. And when it comes to travel, it's TSA-approved and can be stored in its magnetic-shielded box for both checked and carry-on luggage. Plus, at a more affordable price than its predecessor, you can even stock up on multiple bands for your whole family or group.
These are airline and travel safe. The TSA will not give you any trouble over your Sharkbanz 2. Make sure you always travel with it stored in its Sharkbanz box as this is magnetic shielded. This goes for traveling with it in both checked luggage or in carry-on bags.
The price of the Sharkbanz 2 is much lower in comparison to the original version. This makes it more affordable when buying more than one.
Does One Size really fit all?
Yes it does.
The makers of Sharkbanz initially looked into making multiple sizes of the Sharkbanz 2. They weighed up the environmental impact of making one with a long strap and throwing the excess in the trash, against the carbon footprint created by transporting multiples sizes with the likelihood of returns due to the incorrect size being selected when purchased.
The result is that the Sharkbanz 2 has been designed to fit everyone from age 5+. The band comes long enough to go over a wetsuit and be cut down to the correct size.
Full instructions on how to cut this done correctly are included in the packaging.
Important things to know about Sharkbanz
When it comes to Sharkbanz, it's important to remember that sharks are wild animals with unpredictable behavior. It's essential to use caution and common sense when in the water. Here are some key things to keep in mind:
- Sharks are naturally curious animals and it's important not to provoke or attract them.
- Avoid swimming near piers or areas where fishing is taking place.
- Be extra cautious during dawn, dusk, and night swimming.
It's also important to understand that, like seat belts or bike helmets, Sharkbanz can reduce the risk of harm, but they don't provide complete protection. Additionally, Sharkbanz has not been tested on all types of sharks, and although it can reduce the risk of contact with sharks, it cannot guarantee that no contact will occur.
That being said, Sharkbanz has been successfully tested on a variety of predatory shark species, including Bull Sharks, Blacktip, and Great White Sharks. While it can reduce the risk of a curious, investigative Great White shark encounter, especially when wearing multiple units, it's important to understand that it cannot completely eliminate the threat of a Great White.
By keeping these points in mind and using Sharkbanz as an added layer of protection, you can feel more confident and safe while enjoying the ocean.
Should you buy just one, or multiples?
Just like many other safety devices, the greater the coverage, the greater the protection. The electromagnetic field generated by one Sharkbanz will help reduce the risk, but it doesn't act as a full-body force field.
If you are in regions of high shark populations (such as Florida, California, Hawaii, North Carolina, Australia and other areas of the Pacific) or spend a lot of time in the ocean, then it's recommended that you wear multiple Sharkbanz - one on your wrist and one on your ankle.
The Sharkbanz bracelet can be worn on either your ankle or wrist. The majority of shark bites occur on the ankle and leg areas so if you're only buying one, it's recommended it be worn on the ankle.
Sharkbanz versus Sharkbanz 2 - What's the difference?
The first version of the Sharkbanz bracelet was released on January 1, 2015. Since then, the makers of Sharkbanz have continued to study, evolve and test this technology in collaboration with the founders and leaders of shark repelling science and technology.
Sharkbanz 2 has been released and is more powerful with a higher magnetic strength than the original version. This also has a lower profile and a more comfortable silicone band. The clasp has been improved and is a matte coated stainless steel buckle.
Sharkbanz 2 has a sealed magnetic chassis giving it better durability and zero rust. A big plus is the price difference - Sharkbanz 2 is retailing for much cheaper than its predecessor.
Sharkbanz versus other Shark Repellents
Compared to other shark repellent products on the market, this product stands out for its advanced technology and effectiveness.
While some repellents use chemicals or emit loud noises, Sharkbanz uses a unique combination of magnetic and electric fields to create a barrier that sharks will instinctively avoid. Unlike some competing products, this repellent is also designed to be easy to use, with a compact and lightweight design that can be easily attached to a variety of watercraft.
Overall, if you're looking for a reliable and effective way to repel sharks, Sharkbanz is a great choice that outperforms many of its competitors on the market.
Sharkbanz 2 vs Shark Shield
Sharkbanz uses magnetic technology to ward off sharks, and this is a magnet it will never lose its charge. It can be worn on the ankle or wrist, and it's recommended you wear one on each if possible. The Sharkbanz costs around $80 USD each.
The Shark Shield Freedom7 shark repellent is strapped to the ankle and has an antenna that drags behind the wearer. It has 2 electrodes which emit electrical pulses when turned on and submerged. Freedom7 is powered by an Lithium-ion battery and requires charging. The Freedom7 costs around $600 USD, and has been proven to deter Great Whites.
Magnetism and other Electronic Devices
Sharkbanz uses powerful magnetic technology to repel sharks. Magnetism can damage electronics and medical devices, as well as some watches and scuba equipment including dive computers. Sharkbanz needs to be kept at least 12 inches (or 30 cm) away from these devices.
If you are handling electronic equipment or dive computers, put the Sharkbanz on your ankles to avoid direct contact with the electronics.
Make sure Sharkbanz is stored in its box when traveling or when not in use to protect electronics, as the box has magnetic shielding.
General Care and Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance of your Sharkbanz is essential. Salt water and sand can cause corrosion over time, so be sure to thoroughly wash your Sharkbanz after each saltwater swim.
Once dry, store it in its protective Sharkbanz box and away from direct sunlight to prevent damage. Keep it away from extreme temperatures, as temperatures over 130º Fahrenheit (or 55º Celsius) can cause damage.
As Sharkbanz 2 is magnetized, it can attract fine ferrous particles from the sand. These particles will not harm the device, but it's best to brush them off as soon as you notice them.
Ready to Buy a Sharkbanz or two?
In conclusion, Sharkbanz 2 offers an innovative solution for ocean enthusiasts seeking added protection from sharks. With its powerful magnetic technology, it effectively repels sharks without harming other marine life. Its simple, universal design, low cost, and stylish appearance make it a practical and appealing option for anyone looking to enhance their ocean experience.
Whether you're a swimmer, diver, or beachgoer, Sharkbanz 2 provides an extra layer of security, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the ocean without fear. So, embrace the power of technology, and explore the ocean with confidence and peace of mind, with Sharkbanz 2 by your side.
That’s really good, considering the incident happened on surfers… I would gonna get one!
In the sun for long periods.
I noticed your comment on leaving these devices in the sun for long periods. My husband left both of ours on the back shelf of the van in the Florida sun before I found them. A little discolored, but still working OK. He is now rationed to half beer input for a month.
